March for Dimes’ March for Babies, May 5, 2012
Whether it’s supporting research to bring us breakthroughs like surfactant therapy, promoting awareness of prematurity’s impact, or educating mothers about the signs of preterm labor – all our families have benefited from March of Dimes’ leadership, research and advocacy. Parents, nurses and professionals joined Hand to Hold’s team, “Preemie Power,” to show support for a healthy start for all babies. Families cam out to show their support for this important cause and raise awareness of the amazing super hero qualities of all our children. The March for Babies in Austin was held on May 5, 2012, beginning at 9 am at Auditorium Shores. See pictures from the event.

Hand to Hold will be hosted the February Lunch and Learn on Friday, February 24, 2012 from 12-1 pm at Austin’s First Steps High Risk Follow-Up Clinic. We featured information on “Feeding and Nutrition for the NICU Grad” and speakers shared what parents need to know about nutrition and feeding to help their preemie grow and thrive. Experts discussed the pros and cons of both breast milk and formula, how and why to fortify breast milk, and tips for mothers to help mothers’ increase their milk production. Learn more.

26 Miles for 26 Charities – February 19, 2012
Hand to Hold was selected as one of the participants in the 26 Miles for 26 Charities program in support of the 2012 LIVESTRONG Austin Marathon & Half Marathon. The program provides Central Texas non-profits with the opportunity to advance community awareness while raising money to support their mission. Runners joined Hand to Hold’s Preemie Posse to raise awareness and funding for the families we serve. We are grateful to volunteer groups from Bank of America, Cook-Walden, Cedar Park High School Pals, Turner Construction and more who helped us staff the 5K water stop along the course.

Local preemie mama experts – Rhonda McMahon, Jenn Larson and Kathryn Whitaker – will share what they’ve learned about self-care, including physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Hand to Hold donors and friends recently enjoyed a Sports Night Out thanks to a generous gift from Onair Development. A group attended the Texas Stars hockey game on December 27, and another group attended an Austin Toros basketball game on December 30.

Families attended Baby Bugaloo‘s annual visit from Santa on the morning of December 12, 2011 from 10 am to noon. Brooke West Photography was on hand to capture the magic of Christmas. Lunch & Learn – December 9, 2011
Parents and providers joined Hand to Hold for its Lunch & Learn topic that was held Friday, December 9th from noon to 1:00. The topic was “Medicaid Buy-In for Children” This program helps pay medical bills for children with disabilities. It’s for families who need health insurance, but make too much money to get traditional Medicaid. Bump Club and Beyond Fitness Class Benefit – November 19, 2011
Austin’s Bump Club and Beyond debuted with its first event in October 2011 and will be hosting a number of upcoming events – some for families, some just for moms and others for moms and babies. Hand to Hold was excited to highlight a BCB-hosted Family Boot Camp Fitness Class, appropriate for all levels, which was held Nov. 19 at 11 am at Shoal Creek led by Meagan Linstruth of Baby Bootcamp. Registration was $15 and directly benefitted Hand to Hold.
Preemie Power Family Celebration – November 13, 2011
Mark your calendar for the 2nd Annual Preemie Power Family Celebration and NICU Reunion to be held November 13, 2011 from 1-3 p.m. in the Fellowship and Education Building at Covenant Presbyterian Church located at 3003 Northland Drive. We will celebrate all the 2011 Preemie Power participants, announce the contest winners and pass out prize packages, and enjoy music, carnival games and visits from our favorite super heroes. Preemie Power Photo/Essay Contest – October 1-November 13, 2011
Hand to Hold launched the Preemie Power photo and essay contest on Saturday, October 1, 2011. We are enjoying reading the creative narratives about courageous babies that have defeated arch enemies such as respirators, infections and birth defects. Winners will be selected from three age categories plus there will be a new award this year, The Thundering Thurston Award, for the child who receives the most votes. Winners will be announced online and at the Preemie Power Family Celebration.

Preemie Power Fundraising Contest – October 1-November 9, 2011
Hand to Hold invited NICU families and the medical professionals who love them to create a Preemie Power Fundraising Team in support of the Preemie Parent Empowerment Project. Funds raised through Preemie Power will provide vital resources to families during and after a NICU stay including information about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, peer-to peer-support matching, educational videos, support groups and ongoing education about the challenges many preemies face. If you, your family or workplace has been affected by premature birth or loss and you’d like to make a difference for other families, we invite you to participate in this meaningful campaign.

Sibling Sundaes – October 16, 2011

Siblings learned about why babies are in the NICU, saw first-hand the medical equipment used to keep babies in the NICU healthy and safe, were taught how to keep germs away from babies, and created a special craft for their baby sister or brother. National Neonatal Nurse Appreciation Day – September 15, 2011
Volunteer parents from across Austin baked cookies and collected goodies for the nurses who cared for their children in the NICU. They also wrote heartfelt notes of gratitude sent via email and posted on Facebook. Two ladies shared: “Lots of love to NICU nurses!!! You saved my son’s life AND my sanity!!!” says Barbara Whiten Balliette and Colleen Heubaum wrote, “Colleen Templin Heubaum NICU nurses are angels on earth.”

Charitable Business Alliance Collects Donations for Fire Victims – ends September 9, 2011
Rae Cosmetics, BOND Boutique, and Children’s Medical Group collected diapers, clothes, pillows, toiletries, food, and more to assist children and families who have been affected by the recent Central Texas Fires. Families brought donations for dropoff and which ended Friday, September 9, 2011. Items were delivered to the former Elgin Fire House for distribution in Bastrop and to the Austin Bar Association temporary site in Bastrop. Sibling Sundaes – July 30, 2011

Hand to Hold’s first installment of Sibling Sundaes (formerly known as Ice Cream & Isolettes) was held on Saturday, July 30, 2011 from 3-4 p.m. a St. David’s North Austin Medical Center. Siblings were invited to enjoy ice cream and learn about their babies in the NICU. The day’s program included talking about why their baby sister/brother is in the NICU, learning about the medical equipment, understanding how to keep germs away, and creating a special craft for their baby sister/brother. This program will be offered on a regular basis. Requests from hospitals are welcome. Music for Angels Among Us – A Piano & Tenor Musical Celebration Honoring Precious Lives – June 5, 2011
Families and classical music lovers enjoyed a Sunday afternoon of classical music in celebration of the precious little ones who have touched our lives, including those who have overcome early birth and those who have left us too soon. The “Music for Angels Among Us” concert was held Sunday, June 5 from 4-6 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church and featured concert pianist James Pinkerton and Tenor Michael Hamilton covering classics from Schubert, Mozart, Chopin and Beethoven. Quarterly Discussion Series – All About Siblings – May 15, 2011
This session discussed “What about healthy siblings?” Are you the parent of a child with special health or developmental needs? Are there additional children in the family that need support? Panelists discussed the unique issues that healthy siblings in families of children with special or chronic health and developmental needs face and how we as parents can support the needs of all of our children. Parents walked away with a better understanding of the struggles siblings in families of children with special health and developmental needs face and received practical suggestions on how to effectively support siblings. Dinner was graciously provided by Buster’s BBQ and dessert by Rise and Shine Bakery. See the event flier. March for Babies – May 7, 2011
Hand to Hold welcomed families and walkers at the March of Dimes’ March for Babies event in Austin, Texas. Children enjoyed making sand art underneath Hand to Hold’s tent, and parents received more information about support available to them through Hand to Hold.
Mother’s Day Tea & Spa Day – May 3, 4, 5, 2011
Hand to Hold volunteers in collaboration with the March of Dimes held a Mother’s Day Tea and Spa Day for moms with babies in the NICU at University Medical Center Brackenridge, Seton Medical Center and Dell Children’s Medical Center earlier this month. Moms were treated to sweet treats, makeovers, manicures and gift bags.Thanks to Bath & Bodyworks, Westgate store for their generous donation of hand sanitizers and lotions.
Hand to Hold volunteers also delivered special, personalized notes of encouragement and support to mothers with children in the NICU at Seton and St. David’s Hospitals in the Austin area. Thanks go to Hand to Hold’s volunteer chairperson Joan Kincaid and volunteers Katrina Moline, Kim Johnson and Kelly Peacock for making these events a success!
Painting with a Purpose @ Painting with a Twist Studio – May 1, 2011
Friends came out to Painting with a Twist Studio on Sunday, May 1st from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a painting session benefitting Hand to Hold. Attendees enjoyed some adult beverages, friendly conversation, more than a few laughs, and an art lesson to create an Austin Motel painting. The $45 registration included everything needed to paint a canvas with the trendy Austin Motel image from Congress Avenue. Half of the proceeds were donated to Hand to Hold. Seton NICU Reunion – April 16, 2011
Hand to Hold was invited to attend Seton’s NICU reunion, and organized a sand table and craft activities for the preemies and their families. Hundreds of NICU graduates gathered at Bailey Square Park where families met one another after having had a child or children in the NICU and learned of the support network Hand to Hold offers families after they have taken a child home from the hospital. Sibling Celebration – April 10, 2011
Hand to Hold announced the launch of its new Sibling Support Program at a special celebration for siblings on April 10, 2011. Parents celebrated brothers and sisters of children with special health and developmental needs since many face unique challenges siblings face as a result of these experiences. Hand to Hold Reception – March 29, 2011
Special thanks to volunteers and supporters who were recognized at the Hand to Hold reception at the Mansion at Judges’ Hill this month. Executive Chef, Rob Snow, and staff provided incredibly tasty appetizers and a breathtaking venue. Thanks to everyone who attended for making the evening memorable. Heartfelt testimonials were shared by Chef Rob Snow, Kristen Knight, Kathryn Whitaker, Matthew Dowd, and and generous contributions were enjoyed from Deep Eddy Sweet Tea Vodka, Tracy Tenpenny Design, Brittany Dawson Photography, and musician, Sean McCarter.
BOND Boutique “More Than Luck Benefit” - March 17-March 31, 2011
Beginning on St. Patrick’s Day, BOND Boutique held a benefit for Hand to Hold. Ten percent of proceeds from marked items through the end of the month were donated to the bereavement program at Hand to Hold in memory of owner, Jenn’s, nephew and niece, Will and Carrie Guy, who were born prematurely.

Preemie Moms Coffee Hour – March 10, 2011
Moms of preemies met at Flightpath coffee house (5011 Duval) to share stories, share advice and learn from each other. Whether currently in the NICU or years past, all preemie moms are invited to Hand to Hold’s monthly, informal coffee talks. Hand to Hold Volunteers First at LiveStrong Austin Marathon Finish Line – February 20, 2011
Twelve Hand to Hold volunteers enjoyed supporting the Livestrong Austin Marathon / 26 Miles for 26 Charities Program by distributing water to thousands of elated, exhausted, emotional runners at the finish line on Sunday, February 20, 2011.
Hand to Hold Quarterly Discussion Series - February 18, 2011
Couples came out to hear David Griffin, licensed professional counselor and board certified professional Christian counselor, who presented on “Maintaining Emotional Engagement: Re-focusing the Eyes of Your Hearts”, an engaging, interactive discussion that helped couples strengthen their relationships. The birth of a child, medical complications or a loss can strain relationships in ways we don’t expect. It is possible to maintain caring relationships in times of stress and trauma. David taught helpful skill-sets to rebuild intimacy and make relationships a safe harbor. The evening’s discussion was open to and designed for believers of all faiths. Dinner provided courtesy of Dream Dinners (620 North location) and dessert courtesy of La Pâtisserie by Luxe Sweets. Learn more and review the presentation notes.
Celebrity Baseball Benefit at the Mansion – February 16, 2011
A Celebrity Baseball Preview was hosted by 104.9 The Horn at the Mansion at Judges’ Hill on February 16th,
benefiting Hand to Hold. Former baseball pros, including preemie dad Danny Peoples, joined Reid Ryan and other esteemed peers to preview the University of Texas, Texas Rangers and Round Rock Express’ upcoming baseball seasons. The 2011 Texas Baseball Preview Luncheon included distinguished guests Mike Capps (voice of the RR Express), George King (GM of the RR Express), Justin Simmons (former UT All American, Kirk Dressendorfer, Former UT All American and MLB player), Tom Ball (former Longhorn), Danny Peoples (former Longhorn & MLB player), and Hand to Hold father of preemies, Henry Medrano. Valentine’s Day Mini Photo Sessions – February 1 and 4, 2011
Baby Bugaloo and Brooke West Photography teamed up for Valentine’s Day Photo Mini Photo Sessions on February 1st and 4th from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and which sold out! Cost was $50 per session with half the proceeds donated to Hand to Hold. Thanks to all the families who participated!
Cookies & Milk with NICU Families – December 16, 20, 21, 2010
Having a baby or babies in the NICU during the holidays is stressful and isolating. Volunteers spread some cheer and lent an ear to families who had a child in the NICU over the holidays including:
- St. David’s Medical Center, Thursday, December 16, 6 p.m.
- St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center – Monday, December 20, noon-1 p.m.
- North Austin Medical Center – Tuesday, December 21, 6:30 p.m.

Photos with Santa & Ornament Painting at Baby Bugaloo – December 18, 2010
Santa and his elves were at Baby Bugaloo on Saturday, December 18, from 10 a.m. to noon. Brooke West Photography wase there to capture the moment that little ones told Santa what was on the wish list for 2010. For a mini-session fee of $50, participating families received: one (1) 5×7 professional print, access to specially discounted prints and products, a Holiday Treat from Brooke West-Fick and a chance to win a $150 Gift Certificate from Brooke West Photography! Half of the mini-session fee and 10% of sales of prints & products were donated to Hand to Hold.
Children painted ornaments from Brush Strokes Pottery from 10 a.m. to noon. Ornaments were kiln-fired and ready to pick up before Christmas. Cost was $12 for one ornament, $10 for each additional ornament. 10% of proceeds were donated to Hand to Hold.
Baby Bugaloo discounted boutique merchandise by 10% from 10 a.m. to noon. Again, 10% of proceeds during this promotion will benefit Hand to Hold. Ho. Ho. Ho!!!
Preemie Power Photo Contest & Family Celebration – November 14, 2010
Hand to Hold’s Preemie Power Photo Contest celebrated Central Texas’ tiny (and not so tiny, anymore) super heroes. Seventy families submitted photos and short essays about their super hero child, and more than 13,000 votes were cast in the contest. Congratulations to Thundering Thurston, The Amazing Bryce-anator and Kate the Great who received top honors. The winners were announced at the first annual Preemie Power family celebration that was held from 1-3:30 p.m. on November 14 in North Austin. The free, family-friendly party celebrated Hand to Hold’s first birthday and served as a community-wide NICU reunion for families to celebrate their extraordinary super hero children. Read more.
Halloween Mini Photo Sessions – October 25 and 27, 2010
Parents brought their little princesses and goblins for a $50 mini photo-session at Baby Bugaloo on Monday, October 25 or October 27. Brooke West Photography, specializing in children’s photography, was there to perfectly capture each child’s personality on film! Baby Bugaloo is a unique boutique for hip infants and toddlers, located in SW Austin. Each child received a special Halloween treat and parents enjoyed 40% off Halloween clothes, costumes, accessories and toys. Each participating family was entered to win a $150 gift certificate from Brooke West Photography good towards the purchase of a photo session or prints. Proceeds benefitted Hand to Hold.

Hand to Hold Discussion Series - September 30, 2010
The fall Hand to Hold Discussion Series was held September 30, 2010 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Dell Children’s Medical Center. The discussion featured a keynote by Chris Watkins of Early Childhood Intervention who shared how to get the most out of early intervention, what happens upon transition out of the ECI program and what ongoing therapies may be necessary for continued developmental growth. After the initial presenation, a panel of therapists from around Austin addressed questions from the audience. A total of 13 therapy practices were on hand to share information to parents who attended. Read more.
National Neonatal Nurse Appreciation Day – September 15, 2010
Volunteers gathered sweet treats, baked goodies and shared heartfelt notes with NICU nurses this past September to thank them for caring for their babies. Volunteers made six baskets of goodies and delivered them to six Austin area NICUs.

Get Nailed In To Austin Fashion Week – August 19, 2010
Beyond Tradition and Tracy Tenpenny Design celebrated Austin Fashion Week and the 2nd Street District’s 5th Anniversary from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, August 19 at Beyond Tradition (221 West 2nd Street, Austin). Tracy’s new collection which was created specifically for Austin Fashion Week 2010 was unveiled in grand style at this happening party and shopping event. Ten percent of purchases from the event benefitted Hand to Hold. See the invitation.

Martini and Mimosa Brunch – August 15, 2010
Fashionable ladies and gents arrived to makeover their accessories and enjoy a martini and mimosa brunch during Austin’s Fashion Week with Rae Cosmetics, which benefitted Hand to Hold. The posh event was held at the Rae Cosmetics Studio (1206 West 38th Street in the 26 Doors Shopping Center, Austin, Texas) from 11:30 am to 3:00 p.m. and included complimentary Rae Cosmetic Makeovers. Attendees were able to design their own Catherine Nicole Jewelry. Everyone enjoyed goodies from Blue Note Bakery and photos from the Kate Rousset Photobooth before heading out. See the invitation. Private Shopping Baby Bugaloo Baby Shower – August 15, 2010
Ladies joined us on Sunday, August 15, 2010 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Baby Bugaloo (5700 W. Slaughter Lane #220, Austin, Texas) for an exclusive Private Shopping Baby Shower. They shopped to their heart’s content and enjoyed refreshments, a raffle, door prizes and goody bags. In addition to a 10% discount on all purchases, free Similac diaper bags were given out as party favors while supplies lasted. Hand to Hold Discussion Series – June 23, 2010
The Hand to Hold Premiere Discussion Series was held June 23, 2010 at St. David’s Hospital. The discussion featured Jennifer Gunter, MD who spoke about the “Mind-Body Connection and Prematurity.” After the audience question and answer session, Dr. Gunter signed copies of her new book The Preemie Primer.
