Are you navigating a challenging experience, such as having a baby in the NICU? You might feel alone or isolated during this difficult time. Please know that you don’t have to go through it alone. Joining a NICU support group can provide the comfort and connection you need.

In this article, we’ll explore the benefits of NICU support groups, share tips on finding and connecting with others who understand your experience, and provide information about the NICU support groups offered by Hand to Hold. Whether you’re currently in the NICU or navigating life after it, support is here for you.

What is a NICU support group?

A NICU support group is a shared space where individuals experiencing similar challenges, such as a NICU stay, can come together to connect, share experiences, and offer encouragement. It provides a sense of community, fostering understanding and mutual support during one of the most challenging times of a parent’s life. As the saying goes, there is strength in numbers.

Joining a NICU support group offers many benefits, including feeling less isolated and alone, gaining strength, hope, or a sense of control, and reducing feelings of anxiety, depression, and emotional distress.

NICU support groups can be held in-person or online to provide flexibility for participants. These groups may be facilitated by a peer with shared experiences or led by a professional counselor. Some groups focus on broader topics, while others, like grief, anxiety, or adjusting after a NICU stay, offer specific, tailored support.

Whether you’re still navigating the NICU journey or processing your experiences afterward, a NICU support group can help you feel connected and empowered.

Qualities to Look for in a Support Group

Finding the right support group can make a world of difference. The best groups often have some key qualities in common. A good group will foster a welcoming, positive, and encouraging environment that helps members feel uplifted. The members of the group should be respectful, understanding, and empathetic. Everyone should feel heard and supported without judgment. There should also be a rule that the members of the group will keep the content of the meetings confidential to protect everyone’s privacy.

The best support groups are led by a knowledgeable and experienced facilitator who can guide discussions and ensure a safe environment. Hand to Hold’s Virtual Family Support Specialists have their own personal NICU experience, are Certified Mental Health Peer Specialists, and have completed additional training in maternal mental health.

It’s also helpful to attend a few sessions to ensure it’s the right fit for you.

Hand to Hold’s Virtual Support Groups

Here at Hand to Hold, we offer free virtual support groups for families before, during, and after a NICU stay. Families can attend just once, weekly, multiple times a week, or whenever you need. We are here to meet you where you are. We usually begin our groups with brief introductions and “What brought you here today?” To register for one of our groups, visit our support group calendar.

You don’t have to struggle alone. Find strength through shared experiences. I encourage you to join a support group that meets your needs. It can be incredibly impactful on your emotional and social well-being. I wish you all the best. The NICU is hard, we’re here to help.
